What You Need to Know About Merchant Marine Physical Fitness Tests

Getting into the Merchant Navy allows you to work on a wide variety of ships and boats that travel the open seas. To be considered for this type of work, you need to meet or exceed the medical requirements and health standards put in place by the organization. The Merchant Marine physical involves various tests to gauge the physical strength and physiological efficiency of the body.

All Body Systems Are Healthy and Functional

All body systems including the following must be working efficiently, without any signs of disease or other health conditions. No signs of chronic or acute diseases must be present:

  • Cardiovascular
  • Skeletal
  • Muscular
  • Genitourinary
  • Lymphatic

No Impairment of Speech, Hearing or Sight

You must also be able to pass vision and hearing screenings and fall within the range required to join the Merchant Navy. You must not have any noticeable speech impediment that prevents you from speaking clearly and effectively.

Physiological Functions Are Within Normal Range

Physiological functions must all be within normal range for a healthy male or female. This includes blood pressure, blood glucose levels, oxygen levels, respiration, and heart rate. No signs of chronic illness or disease must be present.

Physically Strong and Mentally Sound

The body must be physically strong with no defects or abnormalities that would impair how you function while completing your duties. Your mind must be mentally sound and be able to fully comprehend and react effectively according to each situation.

Joining the Merchant Navy allows you to travel the world and make a career of working on the water. This type of life can be rigorous and requires good mental and physical health.
